The key to a great sod installation is “Green Side Up!” In all seriousness, the installation process is critical to long term success. While many companies install sod, few do it with the long term result in mind.

Our installation process begins with proper ground preparation. If the ground is not properly prepared, the new sod will struggle to survive. Many customers ask me, “Do you add any topsoil?” The answer is, “Not unless you have a huge hole to fill in.” Why? Remember, we are using sod varieties that need less water – in other words they are more drought tolerant. The reason they are more drought tolerant is because their roots grow deeper into the soil – which means they have access to more moisture. Adding a thin layer of topsoil on top of the ground really makes little or no difference as the sod roots are going to “punch” through the topsoil and grow into whatever is below the new topsoil. However, many companies use topsoil because it is easier to cover up existing soil than it is to properly prepare it – plus they can charge you more money for adding topsoil.

Team Sod Pro completely tills the area to be sodded in order to eliminate any soil compaction. This also allows oxygen into the soil. We then remove large rocks, debris, etc., and hand rake the entire area for a final surface grade. Now we are ready to install the sod!
